Financing the Unmet Needs of the Older People in Pakistan
Around 13.7 million people in Pakistan are aged over 60, which is 7 percent of the country's total population. The proportion of older people is expected to double in 2050. Out of 13.7 million people, around 1.8 million older people live below the poverty line without any social protection support. Approximately 0.415 million senior people, who belong to the lowest income percentile, are sick. An ageing population increases the health services demand. These people need an urgent welfare program of PKR 80.92 billion. Out of these 0.415 million sick elderly people, 0.186 million are females and need financial assistance of PKR 36.25 billion. The number of sick elderly people who belong to the lowest income percentile will rise to 0.495 million in 2025 and would require a budget of PKR 1.18 trillion. With this backdrop, this paper explores older people's social protection needs using an exploratory research method in Pakistan. This paper provides valuable insights for policymakers to take necessary actions to protect the vulnerable elderly of our society.
